Dog Sees God
Fall 2018

Directed by Hope Weltman

Assistant Directed by Camryn Powers and Stephen Gover

An "unauthorized parody," the play reimagines characters from the popular comic strip Peanuts as degenerate teenagers. Drug use, child sexual abuse, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion, sexual relations and identity are among the issues covered in this parody of the works of Charles M. Schulz. The show cleverly disguises the identity of each character, so that the issues of the play draw more focus than attempting to guess "who's who". However, the use of these famous characters is what gives the show its emotional punch: even these beloved child characters must some day grow up and deal with a harsh reality as they find their place in the world.

Deathtrap
Once-successful playwright Sidney Bruhl is going through a bit of a dry spell, and unable to write a sure-fire hit. To make his struggle even more frustrating, Clifford Anderson, a student of one of Sidney's writing seminars, has recently sent him a copy of his first attempt at playwriting for Sidney's review and advice--so perfect in its construction that, as Sidney says, "A gifted director couldn't even hurt it." The play, entitled "Deathtrap," is a five character, two act thriller. Out of his desperate desire to once again be the king of Broadway, Sidney, much to his wife Myra's concern, toys with the idea of doing whatever it takes to get rid of Clifford and present the play as his own.

However, shortly after Clifford arrives, it's clear that things are not what they seem. Even Helga Ten Dorp, the Dutch psychic from next door, and Porter Milgram, Sidney's observant attorney, can only speculate where the line between truth and deception lies. And in the end, it all boils down to one question: how far is someone willing to go to achieve success?

Venus in Fur
In this seductive, deliciously dark comedy, Thomas, a playwright-slash-director, has written an adaptation of the classic novel, Venus in Fur, by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. However, he is stopped by Vanda Jordan, a water-logged, foul-mouthed actrice, who manages to swing an audition despite her seeming cluelessness. The further the two get into the reading the more the lines of director, actor, and character blur, and the more the night begins to turn from an audition into something else. Full of humor, sensuality, and absolute power, Venus in Fur questions the established roles within gender and theater.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)[revised]
How on earth can a few people do the impossible: act through Shakespeare’s entire canon-37 plays- in 97 minutes? By summarizing the canon through football plays, rap songs, and outrageously condensed, comedy mash-up titles (like Four Weddings and a Transvestite), of course! The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) hilariously summarizes all of Shakespeare’s plays, using reenactments and audience participation. It is famous for holding the (self-proclaimed) record for the shortest production of Hamlet at 43 seconds. An extremely popular play that ran in London for nine years and has enjoyed countless productions in various languages playing throughout the world, The Co
mplete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) entertains and teaches audiences facts about Shakespeare while ensuring them a rollicking good time. While the show itself is partially made up of skits and scenes, there is a linear plot line overarching it all and a goal the characters are trying to obtain. Through the use of smart comedy, this show entertains an audience and allows them to spend time getting to know each character.

However they soon discover her distant relatives weren’t her long-lost nephews but her nieces, so now Leo and Jack have to pretend to be “Maxine” and “Stephanie”- wigs and dresses and voices and all!

While at the old woman's estate, Leo and Jack attempt a balance between pretending to be women while reverting back to their own selves trying to woo their love interests at the estate, Meg and Audrey.

Clybourne Park
Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play, Clybourne Park is a razor-sharp satire about the politics of race. In response to Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, playwright Bruce Norris set up Clybourne Park as a pair of scenes that bookend Hansberry’s piece. These two scenes, fifty years apart, are both set in the same modest bungalow on Chicago’s northwest side that features at the center of A Raisin in the Sun. The first scene takes place before and the second scene takes place after the events of A Raisin in the Sun. In 1959, Russ and Bev are moving out to the suburbs after the tragic death of their son. Inadvertently, they have sold their house to the neighborhood’s first blac
k family. Fifty years later in 2009, the roles are reversed when a young white couple buys the lot in what is now a predominantly black neighborhood, signaling a new wave of gentrification. In both instances, a community showdown takes place, pitting race against real estate with this home as the battleground.

The Cripple of Inishmaan

Set on the remote island of Inishmaan off the west coast of Ireland in 1934, The Cripple of Inishmaan is a strange comic tale in the great tradition of Irish storytelling. As word arrives on Inishmaan that a Hollywood director is coming to a neighboring island to make a movie, the one person who wants to be in the film more than anybody is young Cripple Billy, an unloved boy whose chief occupation has been gazing at cows and yearning for a girl who wants no part of him. Billy is determined to cross the sea and audition for a role, and news of his audacity quickly ripples through the rumor starved community. The play evolves into a merciless portrayal of a world so comically cramped and mean-spirited that hope is an affront to its order. Filled with a cast of extraordinary characters and unexpected plot turns, The Cripple of Inishmaan promises to take the audience along on Cripple Billy's crazy journey of hope and discovery, with a heavy dose of dark humor.

True West

True West is a character study that examines the relationship between Austin, a screenwriter, and his older brother Lee. It is set in the kitchen of their mother's home 40 miles east of Los Angeles. Austin is house-sitting while their mother is in Alaska, and there he is confronted by his brother, who proceeds to bully his way into staying at the house and using Austin's car. In addition, the screenplay which Austin is pitching to his connection in Hollywood somehow gets taken over by the pushy con-man tactics of Lee, and the brothers find themselves forced to cooperate in the creation of a story that will make or break both their lives. In the process, the conflict between the brothers creates a heated situation in which their roles as successful family man and nomadic drifter are somehow reversed, and each man finds himself admitting that he had somehow always wished he were in the other's shoes.

His best friend Dick Christie and his wife Linda attempt to get Allan back on his feet after a period of intense loneliness. Throughout his awkward attempts and failure though, Allan soon discovers feelings for Dick’s wife, Linda, and is terrified on whether to act on them or not. Play On!

Play On! is a comedic play featuring a theater group trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty author who keeps revising the script. Act I is a rehearsal of “Murder Most Foul,” Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal (where lines are forgotten and changed by the author), and Act III is the actual performance in which anything that can go wrong does. A New Brain

“A New Brain” follows the story of Gordon Schwinn, a young songwriter working for a children’s television show star Mr. Bungee, who dresses as a frog. During a break in the music-writing process, Gordon meets his best friend and manager Rhoda for lunch. Before digging into his baked ziti, he faints and falls face first into the meal and is promptly rushed to the hospital. The hospital staff discovers an arterial venous malformation and decides that Gordon needs a craniotomy. All of a sudden, Gordon is faced with a life-or-death situation, and is terrified to make a decision. His greatest fear is that he will die with all of his greatest songs still inside him. While in the hospital, Gordon accompanied by his mother, Rhoda and his boyfriend Roger contemplate the situation and weigh all of the options. This whole time, Gordon is being antagonized by a painfully realistic hallucination of his despotic and tyrannical boss, Mr. Bungee. After the surgery, Gordon falls into a coma and searches for and finds clarity and answers in the depths of his unconscious mind.

Welcome to Almost, Maine, a town that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States—it’s almost in Canada. And it almost doesn’t exist. Because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it’s just…Almost.

One cold, clear Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. And life for the people of Almost, Maine will never be the same.

ALMOST, MAINE: It’s love. But not quite.
