Fall 2018 Directed by Hope Weltman Assistant Directed by Camryn Powers and Stephen Gover An "unauthorized parody," the play reimagines characters from the popular comic strip Peanuts as degenerate teenagers. Drug use, child sexual abuse, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion, sexual relations and identity are among the issues covered in this parody of the works of Charles M. Schulz. The show cleverly disguises the identity of each character, so that the issues of the play draw more focus than attempting to guess "who's who". However, the use of these famous characters is what gives the show its emotional punch: even these beloved child characters must some day grow up and deal with a harsh reality as they find their place in the world. Once-successful playwright Sidney Bruhl is going through a bit of a dry spell, and unable to write a sure-fire hit. To make his struggle even more frustrating, Clifford Anderson, a student of one of Sidney's writing seminars, has recently sent him a copy of his first attempt at playwriting for Sidney's review and advice--so perfect in its construction that, as Sidney says, "A gifted director couldn't even hurt it." The play, entitled "Deathtrap," is a five character, two act thriller. Out of his desperate desire to once again be the king of Broadway, Sidney, much to his wife Myra's concern, toys with the idea of doing whatever it takes to get rid of Clifford and present the play as his own. However, shortly after Clifford arrives, it's clear that things are not what they seem. Even Helga Ten Dorp, the Dutch psychic from next door, and Porter Milgram, Sidney's observant attorney, can only speculate where the line between truth and deception lies. And in the end, it all boils down to one question: how far is someone willing to go to achieve success? In this one small room, through these few seemingly trivial games, quiet wars are waged, emotional wounds are nursed, and healing is finally, slowly, able to begin. In this seductive, deliciously dark comedy, Thomas, a playwright-slash-director, has written an adaptation of the classic novel, Venus in Fur, by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Frustrated by the lack of talent at auditions for his strong, feminine, and experienced lead, Vanda von Dunayev, he resolves to go home and soothe his ego. However, he is stopped by Vanda Jordan, a water-logged, foul-mouthed actrice, who manages to swing an audition despite her seeming cluelessness. The further the two get into the reading the more the lines of director, actor, and character blur, and the more the night begins to turn from an audition into something else. Full of humor, sensuality, and absolute power, Venus in Fur questions the established roles within gender and theater. "Wildly Intelligent and sometimes frightening... it constitutes a masterful exploration of the art of acting—onstage and off." How on earth can a few people do the impossible: act through Shakespeare’s entire canon-37 plays- in 97 minutes? By summarizing the canon through football plays, rap songs, and outrageously condensed, comedy mash-up titles (like Four Weddings and a Transvestite), of course! The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) hilariously summarizes all of Shakespeare’s plays, using reenactments and audience participation. It is famous for holding the (self-proclaimed) record for the shortest production of Hamlet at 43 seconds. An extremely popular play that ran in London for nine years and has enjoyed countless productions in various languages playing throughout the world, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) entertains and teaches audiences facts about Shakespeare while ensuring them a rollicking good time. While the show itself is partially made up of skits and scenes, there is a linear plot line overarching it all and a goal the characters are trying to obtain. Through the use of smart comedy, this show entertains an audience and allows them to spend time getting to know each character. Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play, Clybourne Park is a razor-sharp satire about the politics of race. In response to Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, playwright Bruce Norris set up Clybourne Park as a pair of scenes that bookend Hansberry’s piece. These two scenes, fifty years apart, are both set in the same modest bungalow on Chicago’s northwest side that features at the center of A Raisin in the Sun. The first scene takes place before and the second scene takes place after the events of A Raisin in the Sun. In 1959, Russ and Bev are moving out to the suburbs after the tragic death of their son. Inadvertently, they have sold their house to the neighborhood’s first black family. Fifty years later in 2009, the roles are reversed when a young white couple buys the lot in what is now a predominantly black neighborhood, signaling a new wave of gentrification. In both instances, a community showdown takes place, pitting race against real estate with this home as the battleground. True West
True West is a character study that examines the relationship between Austin, a screenwriter, and his older brother Lee. It is set in the kitchen of their mother's home 40 miles east of Los Angeles. Austin is house-sitting while their mother is in Alaska, and there he is confronted by his brother, who proceeds to bully his way into staying at the house and using Austin's car. In addition, the screenplay which Austin is pitching to his connection in Hollywood somehow gets taken over by the pushy con-man tactics of Lee, and the brothers find themselves forced to cooperate in the creation of a story that will make or break both their lives. In the process, the conflict between the brothers creates a heated situation in which their roles as successful family man and nomadic drifter are somehow reversed, and each man finds himself admitting that he had somehow always wished he were in the other's shoes. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. And life for the people of Almost, Maine will never be the same. ALMOST, MAINE: It’s love. But not quite.
